Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood

This week has been pretty busy with getting ready to move into our new house.   We signed all of the mortgage papers today, once the deed is filed with the county (tomorrow) we can start to move in.   Looks like we’ll get the keys around 7pm tomorrow night.    Then we have a full weekend of deliveries, unpacking, organizing.

I must say – we have had unbelievable weather here in Seattle the past few days.   It has been warm(ish), about 45 degrees, all week and we have had several days in a row of clear blue skies and bright shinning sun.    This morning, we walked into the park right at 7:30 and saw a full moon hanging over the Olympic mountains, all while peering out over Eliot bay.   There’s just no beating the scenery out here, we have mountains, forests, and water, everything you’d want in your natural landscape.

Ikea is FUN! / House updates

Ikea is a huge store.   Seriously, they have everything.    I had no idea that they make appliances, or that you can purchase an ENTIRE kitchen: cabinets, sink, fridge, dishwasher, oven, table, etc…

We purchased some pieces from the build-it-yourself STOLMEN storage system.   Our new house has a decent sized closet, but did not have adequate built-in shelving.   As you can see from the cart, we are taking care of that.    Since our bedroom (and rooms in general) are on the small side, maximizing the utility of closets will reduce clutter other places.

On the house front, we are scheduled to take possession of the new houseon Thursday the 24th at 9pm – PST of course ;) .  We have a very busy week scheduled.   Next Friday we have the movers coming, crate and barrel delivering furniture, and circuit city delivering a new TV.  Saturday we’ve got Comcast coming out (to make the TV useful) and select comfort is delivering our bed.   At some other point to be scheduled, Pottery Barn is delivering our bedroom furniture (yes we’re getting the mattress first…oh well).

This whole house thing is very exciting.   I never pictured myself in a townhouse with a view of downtown Seattle and Mt. Rainier, but it feels like the right place.   I actually didn’t think I would live in a major city, realy live in the city and not out in the burbs, but that also feel right.   Maybe I’m getting hipper in my old age, or maybe just a little wiser.

Our new house is in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle (on the north side of the city), and is just a really cool place.  I would say it is best described as eclectic.   There are people from several generations living side-by-side, plenty of families, and plenty of young people.   We should be able to walk most places, and really do the urban lifestyle thing for a while.   ok, that’s enough for now.

To The Market

We had a beautiful day here in Seattle. It was sunny all day with a temperature in the high 40s.

We walked from our apartment to the market (about a 15 minute walk), enjoyed some fried seafood on pier 55 (or 56) and then went through the market. No buying today – trying to avoid amassing to much extra stuff before we get into the new house.

Shopping Shopping Shopping

We had our home inspection yesterday, and everything was as expected on a new home.   The garbage disposal needs to be replaced, and there is some insulation missing in the ceiling of the master bedroom, but the builder is going to fix both of these shortly.   The good news is that we are able to move our closing date up to January 18th, so we will be in the house sooner than expected.

This morning we took the dogs to the Golden Gardens dog park.   This park is pretty close to our new house.   The dog park is on a hill overlooking Puget Sound, and there is a beach and a marina.   This seems like the place to go boating.

Moving to Seattle

In december 2007, we moved from Cincinnati, Ohio to Seattle, Washington. We moved because I was offered a position with Amazon.com after completing my Ph.D.

At this point we’ve only been here a week, but we have settled in pretty well. We’re walking more places and acclimating to living in the city.

We are also soon to be homeowners again (second from the left in the picture). More updates on that after we move in!
